This book was recommended to me by Rui. This isn’t the kind of book that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It is the autobiography of a man who lived through difficult times but managed to keep his head above water. It is very lyrically written, mostly in a backflash style, looking back at this man’s time in the war and the difficult nature of the relationship with his adopted daughter. The book is quite sad, and can get quite disturbing, especially when he describes the situation of comfort women during the war. I wouldn’t have chosen this book for myself, but I’m glad that I read it. The only criticism that I would have to raise is that nothing really happens — and when something does happen, it is a past event, so you can guess how it will turn out.
